Cluster analysis of infrared spectra of repaired articular cartilage

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Articular cartilage (AC) has a low ability to heal itself after degradation [1]. To evaluate the success of healing, changes in the composition and structure of AC can be investigated at the microscopical level. Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIR-MS) is sensitive and nondestructive technique allowing spatial determination of chemical and structural composition of tissues [2,3]. In the present study we evaluate the potential of a non-supervised cluster analysis method applied to FTIR-MS spectra to automatically distinguish intact and spontaneously repaired rabbit AC tissues.

Monitoring the Progression of Spontaneous Articular Cartilage Healing with Infrared Spectroscopy
OBJECTIVE Evaluation of early compositional changes in healing articular cartilage is critical for understanding tissue repair and for therapeutic decision-making. Fourier transform infrared imaging spectroscopy (FT-IRIS) can be used to assess the molecular composition of harvested repair tissue. Furthermore, use of an infrared fiber-optic probe (IFOP) has the potential for translation to a cli...
متن کاملImaging of Osteoarthritic Human Articular Cartilage using Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy Combined with Multivariate and Univariate Analysis
The changes in chemical composition of human articular cartilage (AC) caused by osteoarthritis (OA) were investigated using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIR-MS). We demonstrate the sensitivity of FTIR-MS for monitoring compositional changes that occur with OA progression. Twenty-eight AC samples from tibial plateaus were imaged with FTIR-MS. Hyperspectral images of all samples...
متن کاملMesenchymal stem cells can survive on the extracellular matrix-derived decellularized bovine articular cartilage scaffold
Objective (s): The scarcity of articular cartilage defect to repair due to absence of blood vessels and tissue engineering is one of the promising approaches for cartilage regeneration. The objective of this study was to prepare an extracellular matrix derived decellularized bovine articular cartilage scaffold and investigate its interactions with seeded rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (...
متن کاملFourier Transform Infrared Imaging and Infrared Fiber Optic Probe Spectroscopy Identify Collagen Type in Connective Tissues
Hyaline cartilage and mechanically inferior fibrocartilage consisting of mixed collagen types are frequently found together in repairing articular cartilage. The present study seeks to develop methodology to identify collagen type and other tissue components using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral evaluation of matrix composition in combination with multivariate analyses. FTIR spectra ...
متن کاملHyaluronic acid and phospholipid interactions useful for repaired articular cartilage surfaces—a mini review toward tribological surgical adjuvants
This mini review is focused on the emerging nexus between the medical device and pharmaceutical industries toward the treatment of damaged articular cartilage. The physical rationale of hyaluronic acid and phospholipid preparations as tribological surgical adjuvants for repaired articular cartilage surfaces is explored, with directions for possible new research which have arisen due to the ther...
